The story of the record

Moto Pamba is where Awilo Longomba's solo story begins. After years behind the drum kit with Congolese bands, he stepped to the front of the stage with a record that kept the rhythm section at the centre while putting his own voice in charge.

The album introduced the fast, guitar-led Soukous energy that would become his signature: bright interlocking guitars, driving percussion and call-and-response vocals written to fill a dance floor rather than sit quietly in the background.

For listeners across Central Africa it was the arrival of a new frontman; for Awilo it set the template every later record would build on.
