Who is Awilo Longomba?
Awilo Longomba is a Congolese singer, songwriter and former drummer from Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and one of the best known names in African dance music. The son of Congolese rumba pioneer Vicky Longomba, he began his career behind the drum kit before stepping out as a frontman in the mid-1990s.
His 1998 album Coupé Bibamba carried the fast, guitar-driven pulse of Soukous and the Ndombolo dance sound far beyond Congo, and he has kept releasing music and touring ever since — working with artists including Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, P-Square and Innoss'B.
