Roots
Awilo Longomba grew up in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, in a family where music was part of everyday life. His father, Vicky Longomba, was a founding voice of Congolese rumba, and the sound of the city — its bands, its rehearsals, its dance floors — shaped Awilo long before he ever stood on a stage himself.
The drummer
Before the world heard his voice, Awilo made his name as a drummer, playing with Congolese bands and learning the discipline of rhythm from the inside. Those years behind the kit gave him the timing and instinct that still define his records: music built to move a room.
Finding his voice
Moving from percussion to the microphone, Awilo developed the unmistakable voice and electrifying stage presence that would carry him beyond Kinshasa. It was a deliberate reinvention — the same rhythmic foundation, now led by a singer and a showman.
